Atlantic College is an International VIth Form College founded in 1962, by Kurt Hahn and others. The College was a practical response to the search for new and peaceful solutions to a world riven by political, racial and economic divisions. Through international education, shared experience and community service, the College enables young people to become responsible citizens, politically and environmentally aware, committed to the ideals of peace, justice, understanding and cooperation, and to the implementation of these ideals through action and personal example.
More than 300 students from many backgrounds are drawn together from some 70 countries to live, study and explore the concepts of international understanding and active service to others. Respect and understanding of diverse cultures motivates the academic and social life of the College. Atlantic College is the first of such Colleges now found in ten different countries on five continents.
Most students proceed from the College to Universities throughout the world, having completed the rigorous but enlightened International Baccalaureate Diploma programme. The Programme has depth and breadth, coherence, a commitment to action and service, and to internationality. All students and staff are committed to the principle and practice of service to others. Students and staff choose to participate in one or more of the many community services operated at the College. In addition to the Service programme, a wide range of activities is offered: physical; recreational; cultural and aesthetic. Music, Art and Drama are well supported and there is a rich programme of performances of all kinds. Soccer, Hockey and Rugby are popular as are outdoor pursuits such as sailing, canoeing, surfing, climbing and hill-walking. Activities reflecting the diverse cultures represented at the College and international concerns are also popular. Over 100 options are available in each week.
Atlantic College is situated in the Bristol Channel coast in the Vale of Glamorgan. It is located some 30km from Cardiff - the capital city of Wales - and is 3km from the nearest town, Llantwit Major. The 12th century St Donat's Castle is at the heart of the campus. Modern teaching and laboratory blocks, and staff and student accommodation are also located on campus.
